FORMTIE System

An essential component among shuttering accessories is the tie-rod. It matches all other item such as base plates, threaded base and header plates, wing nuts and hexagonal nuts.

The FORMTIE system prevents breakage in the formwork, thus keeping concrete structures in good shape without discolouration. Besides ease of assembly and removal, the system saves construction costs as all parts are reusable except for the separator (Inner Unit) which is casted into the wall.

 

FORMTIE Complete Set Requirements

 

Assembly of FORMTIE

1) Plastic cone to be attached to both ends of Inner Unit.

2) Drill a 12mm hole for the passage of a plastic cone axis at prescribe location in the panel beforehand.

3) Insert the Inner Unit from the inner panel and screw on the Form Tie.

4) Erect the studs successively. Apply the Flat Rib Washer to the wales and tighten with nuts.

5) Repeat the same procedure for the outer panel.

 

Dismantling of FORMTIE

1) Loosen nuts and remove the wales. 

2) Remove FormTie.

3) Take off panel.

4) Remove plastic cone from concrete surface. Plastic cone hole is filled up by cement mortar.

2. Allowable Strength of Inner Units

Assuming safety factors are taken into consideration, using steel as the material, the design must be based on the strength within the yield point. In general, the yield point of steel is considered to be within 70-80% of the rupture strength, but in the case of the Inner unit, because it is work-hardened, the rupture strength and the yield point are almost similar. Therefore, we recommend that the installer should consider 70% of the rupture strength as the working load.

 

3. Quantity of FORMTIE to be used

To decide the number of Form Tie used, calculation should be based on a side pressure of 2 t/m2 (2 PCS of Form Tie per 1m2 of vertical form) in accordance with JASS 5. However, in today’s construction industry, due to the mass production of plywood panels, concrete pumps and different concrete laying methods, a side pressure of 6 t/m2 is used. 

The active pressure built up from the concrete laying process on the Formwork varies in accordance with the concreting speed, atmospheric temperature, slumps and setting time of the concrete. Therefore, the best way to estimate the side pressure is to consider all the dead and live loads in all conditions at the working site and after which decide on the number of Form Ties to be used.
